I have a question about overdrive?

my friend has a 1988 olds. and when he was coming home from orlando,fla.,he lost his overdrive,when he got as far as georgia.what happened,he lost his overdrive?a mechanic told him it was the modulator valve,on the side of his .its not electric,it has a vacuum modulator.would that cause him to loose the overdrive?
